Product Description
The De Tomaso Pantera is a supercar that debuted in 1971. It was the result of a collaboration between Italian De Tomaso and American Ford. Its low-slung, wedge-shaped body, developed and designed by Italian Carrozzeria Ghia, featured a powerful 5.8-liter V8 engine, originally designed for Ford mid-size and large-size cars, mounted in the center of the body.
Its primary market was the United States, where it was sold and garnered favor as an American-Italian exotic at dealerships affiliated with Lincoln and Mercury, Ford's premium car division. Its peak was the 1970s, when annual sales exceeded 2,000 units. It continued to undergo various minor improvements, becoming a long-lived model, with production continuing until 1992.
Hot Wheels chose this heavily modified competition model to meet the Group 4 (Special Grand Touring Car) category of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) racing regulations. The engine produces over 500 horsepower, a nearly 200 horsepower increase over the standard vehicle. To transfer that power to the road, it's fitted with wide tires, and its most distinctive feature is the overfenders that cover them.
